Tessa - Belgian, like her mom Vanessa - is my youngest model for this project, and she was bubbling with excitement when she told me that dancing filled her with hope.

Here are the 17 people I met at the Maalbeek Metro, who symbolise the 17 lives lost on March 22 last year. It is such a relief that all 17 are now complete...although I have a few left to enamel, it is definitely moving having them all in my home. Now on to the Zaventem airport: 5 down and 10 left to go!
Vanessa
I met Vanessa with her daughter Tessa, and it was the first time that she had dared venture back to the Maalbeek station as she had lost someone dear to her. She told me that the youth of today give her hope.
J'ai rencontré Vanessa avec sa fille Tessa, et c'était la première fois qu'elle osait rentrer à la station de Maalbeek, comme elle avait perdu quelqu'un cher à elle. Elle m'a dit que c'était les jeunes d'aujourd'hui qui lui donnait de l'espoir.
Kimberly
Kimberly is a young Belgian I met at Maalbeek, and her hope is her passion: architecture.

Charlotte
Charlotte had the best smile of the day: it was easy to see how she finds hope in friendship.

Kilian
This was perhaps the funniest duo I met: Kilian and his friend Charlotte. They couldn't speak English and I don't speak Dutch. I therefore had to resort to charades in order to explain what it was I was doing in the Maalbeek station, and why I wanted to take their picture and why I was asking them about hope. In the end, we managed to understand one-another (I think!), and I found out that Kilian finds hope in music.
C'était peut-être le duo le plus drôle que j'ai rencontré: Kilian et son amie Charlotte. Ils ne pouvaient pas parler anglais et je ne parle pas le néerlandais. J'ai donc dû recourir à des charades pour expliquer ce que je faisais à la station de Maalbeek, et pourquoi je voulais prendre leur photo en leur parlant d'espoir. En fin de compte, nous avons réussi à comprendre l'un l'autre (je pense), et j'ai découvert que Kilian trouve de l'espoir dans la musique.

Andrea
Andrea is also Italian. Oddly enough I met him at the Maalbeek metro stations mere minutes after meeting the first Italian Andrea of the day. Coincidence? Either way, Andrea's personal source of hope is God and brotherhood.

Tony is both Filipino and Belgian. Travelling gives him hope.

Andrea is Italian, and he finds hope in travelling and the commonality of diverse peoples. In the end, no matter how different we may appear to be, we are all human.

I'm Back!
Well, after a lengthy pause, I'm back with some more work to show off. Despite a quick jaunt to England last week, I have managed to finish off Emilie, two Andreas, and Tony! Here they are out of the kiln but not yet enamelled. Now...just imagine when there are 32 of them!

Welcome to HOPE Brussels 2017!
I am going to be documenting the journey of this amazing process on this blog so that I can share it with all of you. As you are well aware, each of the glass tiles requires that I sculpt my subject in bas-relief, and then make a wax reverse-copy.
Ground Zero for this project is Emilie, my kids' piano teacher. Emilie comes out from Brussels every Saturday and is a regular user of Brussels's Metro. She had passed through Maalbeeek station a mere ten minutes before the attack, and we all feel very grateful that she made it through safely.
